Sarah Sjostrom started a good Swedish evening at the European Swimming Championships in Rome with her gold in the 50m butterfly. In the team event 4 x 100 meters freestyle, the Swedish team had a good chance of winning another medal.
Sjöström first came out with a good stretch and topped it off when she passed on to Louise Hansson, who then turned out to be Sara Junevik who came out as lead. In the final stage, inexperienced Sophia Åstedt lost the lead during her stretch, but Åstedt finished strong and took the Swedish silver.
– It was good, I felt I had to fight in the last metres, but it was fun to help the team. Feeling great, says Sarah Sjöström after the race.
– It’s fun to see all the joy and to be a part of sharing it with the team, it’s a really great feeling, says Sjöström
“Feeling it all now”
It was a happy Swedish team after the race and Sofia Ostedt, who spanned the last run, was very satisfied with her effort and had a hard time describing her feelings after the medal.
– I do not know what to say. I feel everything now, it feels great. It’s impossible to describe her completely sick, says Sophia Åstedt.
Great Britain came home with the gold medal after overtaking Sweden in the first leg. The bronze medal went to the Dutch team.
