Sweden’s dream in an Olympic mixed doubles final was shattered on Monday when Italy defeated Oscar Eriksson and Almeida de Vall 8-1.
Instead, on Tuesday morning, Swedish time, it was a fight for the bronze medal against Great Britain.
After the loss to Italy, Ericsson explained:
– The goal is to win a medal. We have one match left.
Against Great Britain, Sweden lost the freewheeling team earlier in the tournament.
The British took a 1-0 lead after a good run, which meant Sweden had the advantage of taking the last stone in the second.
The great Swedish collaboration really paid off when Val’s team finished with an unbeatable hit – and set a full four points.
One hundred percent of Almeida de Val
In the third round, Sweden continued to make it difficult for their opponents who had to chase all the time. This results in three new points – Sweden is up 7-1. Thank you very much I have a val without any errors.
– I thought this match would be great. I haven’t seen this coming. It’s a pleasure to watch, says Sarah Carlson, a curling expert at Discovery.
However, Ericsson and the choices could not breathe a sigh of relief, you know, the nets can go fast.
Sweden made mistakes
But unlike the semi-final against Italy, Sweden continued to make mistakes.
Ericsson grabbed an excellent penultimate stone on the fourth, putting more pressure on Britons Bruce Mowat and Jennifer Dodds. De Val’s last clean finishing stone means another point to 8-1.
Another point dropped to fifth with a 9-1 score and Mowat and Dodds looked resigned.
Superlative spray continued to air De Val in Discovery – “Flawless, one hundred percent, witty.”
And despite two points in the sixth round, the Britons chose to surrender 9-3 ahead of the seventh round.
Sofia Carlson says the Sweden national team is completely ruthless in this match and largely flawless.
The smiles were visible through the masks
After the match, she was a big smile – seen through the face masks of Ericsson and de Val.
– It feels really cool and fun to finish on top, says 24-year-old de Waal.
You are welcomed to the Discovery Broadcast.
– You did a very good game, and Oscar also played very well. We make things easier for each other when we play well. It was really fun being outside today.
Have you played better before?
– This was probably my first 100% match.
Now it will be my TV sofa
Tomorrow, Wednesday, they leave the Fall Olympics and return to Sweden while Eriksson joins the men’s team here in Beijing.
– I’m going to sit on a bench in front of the TV and cheer the boys and the women’s team to get more medals.
The final match of curling in mixed doubles between Italy and Norway will be held this afternoon Swedish time.
Mixed doubles has been an Olympic sport since 2018. This was the first time that Sweden had competed.
