Review: Emancipation (2022)

It’s been nearly a year since Will Smith and his open palm became friends with much of the world, and ironically his new slavery movie is misleading and somewhat unreserved.

Will Smith plays Peter, a strong-willed family man As at the beginning of the movie Separated from his loved ones, he works under brutal Confederate rule in a labor camp amid the woods and swamps of Louisiana. There he and the other slaves undergo a hellish existence containing drudgery, branding, and deeper mass graves—all under the command of duty-chewing white soldiers.

Such trials would accumulate for Peter in his furious and ruthless struggle for liberation. A battle that will contain everything from cannonball fire to bloody crocodile wrestling in this bondage drama that dips its toes multiple times in the action genre.

The greatest disgrace to America in history It led to several film adaptations. This is perhaps the most successful of all Steve McQueens 12 years a slaveand there is a clear relationship between him and Release, while the movies couldn’t be more different. shine on 12 years a slave He lies in much, much in his humility, thing Release Will need more.

So much happens – so little feels

Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) His success reaped largely in the action genre, and it’s clear that he brought the same mindset to create this movie. Fuqua weaves this fundamentally personal and fragile story into all sorts of knick-knacks, such as flashy camera angles, a blaring soundtrack, and an eye-popping near-white-and-grey visual style, all of which so perfectly captures the film’s identity that the film’s heavy historical context is almost gone.

On top of that, our hero and freedom fighter Peter – who is loosely based on a real person – feels incredibly one-dimensional. However, no great shadow should fall on Smith, who seems to take on the task of portraying the character of a tortured historical hero of such weight with genuine dedication. Instead, the problem lies in the fact that Peter’s character, like the movie in general, places too much emphasis on grand gestures and idiosyncrasies to get across his message of heroism and determination in the face of ruthless evil.

Because slavery was just a ruthless evil – we may have all been convinced for a long time. What we find difficult to understand is what this endless injustice does to the inner self of the individual. Unfortunately, that did not happen Release me wiser.

“Emancipation” premieres on Apple TV+ December 9.
