Wallberg’s success is gone
A severe knee injury and three surgeries kept Walter Walberg off the humpback slopes for 22 months. But this season, the 21-year-old is back. Although he had never won a World Cup before, he was seen as one of Sweden’s greatest hopes for a medal in Beijing.
There were a total of three Swedes when it was decided to race the hump. However, Wallberg was the only Swede to reach the Super Final. For Felix Elofsson and Ludwig Wellstrom, the Olympic adventure has already ended in Final 1.
Once in the Super Final, the 21-year-old from Bulnas took a big run with a score of 83.23. In doing so, he took home a stunning Olympic gold against defending champion Michael Kingsbury and Japan’s Ikuma Horishima.
Hector’s favorite necklace
Sarah Hector came to the Olympic Games in Beijing as the leader of the World Cup in giant slalom. That made her the top candidate when she stood on the starting line for the Olympic competition. The 29-year-old from Sandviken also had a dream start to come true. After the first race, she took the lead by three tenths and thus was in the gold for the second race.
After a long wait for the second run, Hector pressed next. The Swedish giant slalom star made a strong second series and finished the race 28 per cent ahead of Italian Federica Brignoni. At the finish line, she stretches her hands in the air like a new Olympic champion.
Successful Sprint Olympiad
Sprint specialists Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist became the great Swedish joys of cross-country skiing during the Olympics. The duo showed perfect form for the tournament and can now return to Sweden with three Olympic medals each.
First, he put his favorite slash duo on display in a great race. Jonna Sundling took the gold in superior style before Maja Dahlqvist led to the silver spot. In the team sprint was then a new medal for the duo. The Swedish duo looked for a long time on their way to the gold, but in the end had to settle for the silver behind Germany.
There will also be a Swedish women’s team medal. In the relay, the team featuring Maya Dalqvist, Ebba Anderson, Frida Carlson and Jonah Sandling took the bronze after an impressive finish by Jonah Sondling.
Swedish biathlon medals
After a solid season, hopes are high for the Swedish athletes in Beijing. It was Elvira Öberg who would hand out the Olympic medals in the first place. After losing medals in both the mixed relay and distance events, the 22-year-old claimed Olympic silver in both the sprint and start of the pursuit.
However, the biggest success will come in the ladies’ succession. The Swedish women, along with Len Persson, Mona Broersson, Hana Oberg and Elvira Oberg, created a super competition and took the gold medal ahead of Russia and Germany. It was the first time ever that a Swede won a gold medal in the Olympic relay race.
At the end, there was also a Swedish medal on the men’s side. After a tough tournament, Martin Ponciloma got the shot in the final collegiate start. The Swede entered the final shooting with a chance to win medals and after a strong finish he managed to secure the silver medal.
The Swedish king of skateboarding
Nils van der Poel was one of the biggest forward favorites in the entire games. The Swedish figure skating king continued to press and won two gold medals.
The first gold was won in the 5000m – a competition that turned out to be a real thrill. Nils van der Poel came out in the last pair and then needed to beat Patrick Royst’s 6.09.31 time to jump to the top of the podium. With four laps remaining, he was more than two seconds behind Dutchman Roest. Then the Swede started his strong end. The last two laps were done at 29.01 and 28.97 which was enough to secure a gold medal. The last time was 6.08.84, which was also an Olympic record.
If the gold at 5,000m sits well inside, then the 25-year-old’s gold at 10,000m was a great story. Nils van der Poel broke his own world record by more than two seconds when he clocked at 12.30.74. In doing so, he took home his second Olympic gold and was 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Patrick Roest.
Three curling medals
Three chances to get medals – Three medals! Swedish curling teams made the pinnacle during the Olympic Games in Beijing.
For the Eden team with Niklas Eden, Oscar Eriksson, Rasmus, Rano and Christopher Sundgren, the tournament ended in the best way. The Olympic gold was the only medal that Lagden missed on the merit list. After the Olympic bronze in Sochi 2014 and the Olympic silver in Pyeongchang 2018, the men’s team finally reached the top of the podium. The surprise gold medalist against Great Britain was won by Lagden 5-4 after a penalty shootout.
On the women’s front, team Haselburg have not managed to defend their Olympic gold since 2018. The gold dream collapsed after great drama against Great Britain in the semi-finals. But after the heavy loss in the semi-finals, Hasselburg’s team with Anna Haselburg, Sarah McManus, Sophia Maberg and Agnes Knuchenhauer managed to rise and win the bronze match against Switzerland with a score of 9-7.
There was also a Swedish bronze medal in mixed curling. Oscar Eriksson and Almeida de Vall formed Sweden’s first-ever mixed team at the Olympic Games. After losing in the semi-finals against Italy, the duo won the bronze medal match against Great Britain.
Sandra Neslund avenged the 2018 Olympics
Sandra Neslund has won almost everything in the World Cup in cross-country skiing this season. This made her step into the Beijing Olympics as the top candidate. One of the favorites of the 25-year-old.
Until the final, things went smoothly with Näslund, who won all the qualifiers. Once she reached the final, she stood on the starting line with Fanny Smith, Marielle Thompson and Daniela Meyer. Näslund took the lead right away, taking the lead to the finish and taking home the Olympic gold. The gold medal was a nice revenge for the 25-year-old who finished fourth at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.
Double Friske Bronze
There were double successes in free skating for Sweden during the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Henrik Harlaut has previously won the X-Games eight times. Now he can also call himself an Olympic medalist. The 30-year-old starred in the Big Air final, taking the bronze medal after a score of 181.
Then Jesper Tjäder took Sweden’s second Freeski medal at the Olympics. Tjäder finished third in the downhill swimming and thus took his first ever championship medal.
