Sascha Boumedienne is following in the footsteps of father Joseph

Every Thursday, NHL.com/sv guides readers through a look at the Swedish hockey scene on the international stage. It’s high and low – you know, there are Swedish players in more significant places than the National Hockey League. So join us around Europe and the entire hockey world.

Chasca Boumediene in the footsteps of Father Joseph

Sweden’s Team 17 national team captain Tomas Bananen has named the squad to play in the prestigious World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Charlottetown and Summerside, Canada from November 2-11. Saska Boumediene is a 16-year-old defenseman from the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League’s junior league USHL.

Sascha, as the name suggests, is the son of Joseph Boumedienne, who played about 50 games in New Jersey, Tampa and Washington almost 20 years ago. A defender like Saska, Josef played U-17 hockey for Sweden in 1994-95. He moved on to a long-term job as a scout for the Columbus Blue Jackets before becoming an assistant coach this season.

Last year, Saska became unique when he became the first player born in 2007 to receive a special offer to play in the USHL; The Phantoms gave up the first pick in the draft to get Boumedienne’s signature on a deal:

– Really cool and an honor… It’s an incredibly good league with all the best players, Saska told hockeynews.se at the time. I am very happy and very grateful that they gave me this.

Saska is a strong scoring back with 8 points (1+7) in nine games so far. He is ready for the draft in 2025. Guess if Father Joseph has his eyes on him.

Saska Boumediene could be another of all sons to follow in their father’s footsteps… Skating: Cardi Howe and sons Mark and Marty, Bobby and Brett Hull, Ty and Max Tomi, to name a few. And on the Swedish side Kjell and Mattias Samuelsson, Michael and William and Alexander Nylander, Kent and Robert Nilsson and Niklas and Lias Andersson, again to name a few.
