Sabrent, the SSD manufacturer, is testing a new NVME SSD with PCI Express 5.0, which at the time of writing appears to be the fastest SSD yet. Specifically, the Rocket X5 as it’s called showed read speeds in excess of 14,000MB/s – nearly twice as fast as PCI Express 4.0-based SSDs.
Tests with Crystaldiskmark and Rocket X5 prototypes show a maximum of 14,179MB/s sequential read, and just over 12,000MB/s sequential write speeds. Read and write speeds for large random files with a deep queue depth are between 6000 and 7000MB/s, which is eight times faster than the Rocket 4 Plus, one of the company’s fastest PCI Express 4.0 drives.
Interestingly, judging by the specifications, the Rocket X5 is equipped with the same Phison-branded controller circuitry as all other PCI Express 5.0-based SSDs launched to date. For the majority, peak read and write speeds are around 10,000MB/s and what exactly enables Sabrent to squeeze more performance out of its drives isn’t clear.
Like many other modern SSDs, the Rocket X5 is equipped with a large copper-aluminum heatsink. It’s also equipped with a small fan, which Sabrent says lacks the high-frequency noise found in other fan-equipped SSDs.
