The European Union introduced the fifth sanctions package against Russia, which will stop, among other things, Russian coal and Russian ships. It is now also clear which new individuals will be sanctioned.
One of them is Oleg Deripaska – already on the sanctions lists of the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia.
SVT has in a number of publications examined his financial interests in Sweden. Among other things, he is the largest single owner in Russia’s Rusal, which in turn owns Copal aluminum smelter in Sundsvall.
He owns an arms company
As justification for the new sanctions, the Council of the European Union wrote that Deripaska owns important suppliers of arms and military equipment to the Russian armed forces that were used during the invasion of Ukraine.
“It is therefore responsible for supporting or implementing actions or policies that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, independence, stability or security of Ukraine,” the council wrote.
Swedish authorities billed
Oleg Deripaska is also a major player in the Austrian construction group Strabag. The group includes several Swedish companies that have Salads billed in $1 billion for major infrastructure projects – including Stockholm Bypass, Stockholm City Line and Mariholm Tunnel in Gothenburg.
Strabag distanced himself from the main Russian owner and in an email to SVT wrote that he had no influence on operational activities.
