Polestar’s upcoming four-door GT model, the Polestar 5, will go into production in 2025. Now Polestar announces it has found a partner to supply the batteries for the high-performance GT car. With South Korean battery manufacturer SK On, they have now signed a deal.
Polestar 5 requires batteries with high-performance battery chemistry, fast charging and efficient discharging, and excellent range. SK ON technology is responsive. Battery cell modules with high nickel content have very long 56 cm cells with high energy density.
– Our relationship with SK On has been fruitful since our first collaboration agreement and their investment in our brand. Polestar 5 is being developed rapidly and our GT model will have this high-capacity battery to deliver the expected performance, says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.
Jee Dong-seop, CEO of SK On, adds:
– We are very happy to work with Polestar on their exclusive electric car model. This agreement will strengthen our partnership with Polestar and create new opportunities.
Behind the development of the Polestar 5 is a team based in Great Britain and Sweden. While the Swedish team is focusing on a new electric powertrain, the British team is focusing on developing the chassis.
Polestar previously stated that the new electric motor will provide better power in combination with the 800V system. The production-ready car will be available with two engines delivering 650 kW (884 hp) and 900 Nm of torque.
