Specialist developer Pocket Living have completed their first tower development.
The tower, designed by Metropolitan Workshop, occupies a similarly pocket-sized site between the River Wandle and Southside shopping centre in Mapleton Crescent, Wandsworth. It consists of 254 steel-framed prefabricated modular units, which were installed at the rate of one floor per day, and is faced with distinctive aqua green terracotta cladding.
The 89 flats in the development include those which are just above those conventionally classified as pocket flats although others range between 68-81 sq m.
Metropolitan Workshops are expected to complete a second prefabricated tower for Pocket Living later this year.
Pocket sized flats are often suggested as a partial answer to London’s housing shortage. However, just as relevant as the diminutive dimensions of these flats is the use of offsite construction – a technique which probably offers much greater scope to deliver more affordable property in the capital.
