US President Joe Biden met UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ahead of this week’s NATO summit to maintain and strengthen the US-UK relationship.
US President Joe Biden begins his visit to Great Britain with a meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at his office in Downing Street, London.
According to both sides, the visit is a continuation of ongoing discussions and the meeting will be the fifth in five months. However, this will be the first time Biden has visited Downing Street during his presidency.
Joe Biden announced last week that the US would supply Ukraine with cluster bombs. Britain, for its part, has signed a convention against the use of cluster munitions.
A bunch of weapons came out during the meeting. Sunak told Biden that Britain was acting according to the convention, but each country could decide its own position.
Stable relationship between countries
Biden said there are no downsides to bilateral cooperation.
– We have a lot to talk about. Our relationship is solid.
For his part, Sunak said the meeting was valuable for sustaining the dialogue and that they would continue to discuss how the economies of both countries could be protected through cooperation.
Later in the afternoon, Biden, 80, met with King Charles, 74, at Windsor Castle to talk about the climate crisis and the transition to renewable energy. The context includes that Sunak has received criticism for his lack of commitment to climate issues.
It is unclear exactly what was exchanged between King Charles and Biden. According to Raja’s spokesperson, the meeting was successful and the atmosphere was warm. The meeting can be seen as a symbol of the relationship between America and Great Britain.
Biden is in Vilnius to attend the NATO summit.
