Linkoping – 22 February, 2022 – Northern Ireland becomes the first region in the UK to use the same method to handle medical images from both pathology and radiology. This happens after a series of co-lives by the Institute of Medical Technology and Cyber Security Categories (STO: SECT B) IT solution for digital pathology. It modernizes diagnosis for the benefit of health workers and patients.
Northern Ireland Healthcare (HSC) now, with the help of Sectra’s solution, has digitalized image management, reviewing and writing responses to its pathological functions, which will contribute to future diagnostic diagnoses and benefit patients across the region. The Digital Pathology Project, implemented with the assistance of the Business Services Organization (BSO ITS), is part of the Irish Archive and Communication Organization (NIPACS). It is currently a system that allows radiologists to make resource-based diagnoses, and it makes it easier for pathologists to meet the growing need for their services.
– I’m proud of our project team for Digital Pathology and our partners who provided the new solution, despite the fact that Govit-19 challenges health care here. This is a significant benefit to healthcare professionals, the services we provide and, most importantly, our patients, ”says Karen Bailey, Executive Chairman, BSO.
Pathologists in the region perform approximately 40 million diagnostic tests each year. Thanks to the implementation of digital pathology in the four HSC foundations, microscopes and glass are replaced by high-resolution images that are accessible to pathologists almost anywhere. This milestone is the result of several commissions that have taken place since the sub-agreement was signed in 2019.
Dr. Claire McCauley, in charge of the Digital Pathology Project, says:
– I was very impressed with this organization and how it helps to unite as a region. We now have the opportunity to allow all four of our labs to work together as one virtual lab. Annotation and measuring instruments are especially useful for skin and breast fall. The opportunity to work remotely or from home is crucial to making our employees more mobile and flexible. There is a lot of work going on around the world to develop AI in pathology, and with our new digital pathology system we in Northern Ireland are ready to benefit from that development.
Nicky Harvey, President of BSO’s NIPACS, says:
– Digital pathology is something we can be very proud of. This is a big change for Northern Ireland. Healthcare staff work in diverse groups and accessing information and images from a variety of specialties within an organization can be invaluable in enabling collaborative and holistic diagnostic responses.
Radiologists in the area are already dealing with the same system, among other things, X-rays, ultrasounds and images from computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. These images are now available side-by-side with digital pathologist images in an overview of patients’ medical images. This creates the conditions for health professionals to make more informed decisions.
Says Jane Rental, CEO of Sectra in the UK and Ireland:
– Northern Ireland is a fantastic example of how integrated diagnostic practice can be implemented at a time when hospitals across the UK are now seizing the opportunity to modernize their diagnoses. We are proud to be Northern Ireland’s longtime partner in this journey, and it is wonderful for our teams to see such clear benefits both clinically and patients so quickly. We believe this is the beginning of a continual journey of innovation and inspiration.
The success of the Digital Pathology project has also received strong support from medical staff in Northern Ireland.
Dr. Paul Kelly, pathologist and medical practice representative at the Royal Victoria Hospital at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, adds:
– Digital pathology shows us the future and possibilities. Through the system’s chat function we can ask directly, or provide, get suggestions and second feedback. This has increased the quality of our responses to many patients.
The method of handling the task section and the response times associated with the important answers will also change.
Robbie Wilson, president of the Institute of Pathology at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, says:
– This is the most significant change in cell pathology for over 150 years. This project has contributed a lot to biomedical research and management because we now have a real-time overview of all our cases and their review status. The amount of detailed information now being shared between departments completely changes our analysis of response times. This will help to set more precise expectations for health professionals and patients as to when the answers will be ready. We can easily diagnose and flag regular cases and more serious cases.
