Nothing that founder Carl Pei knows is that the company promised to release Android 13 for Nothing 1 in advance. In an interview with Android Authority He says that the entire development of Nothing OS has gone more smoothly than he and the company could have hoped.
The reason, according to Carl Bay, is that they have not been successful in hiring enough talented developers themselves. At first, they hired about 400 part-time developers from another Android manufacturer. Carl Bay says they are not used to working the way they are not needed, and they are not motivated.
But now the Nothing OS update based on Android 13 is almost ready. Version 1.5 will be released in the first quarter of 2023 and enthusiastic users can already test a beta version today. In addition to upgrading the Android base, the Nothing developers did not replace much of the code on top that came from the designated developers. That should make the system faster and more efficient. The company currently employs about 100 developers.
The next target after 1.5 will be Nothing OS 2.0, which will be a major system overhaul. Carl Pei says it will be the first system release where the company has time to work on more ambitious ideas — version 1.0 was almost entirely about getting a stable platform for the Nothing Phone 1.
