Nine folder options disappear from Explorer

Explorer in Windows 11 is about to lose a bunch of settings for how files and folders are displayed. This is what Microsoft wrote in a blog post about the news in a recent Insider Preview build for the system, with build number 23481.

The following nine settings are removed from Folder Options

  • Hide folder merge conflicts

  • Always show icons, never thumbnails

  • Show file icon on thumbnails

  • Show file size information in folder tips

  • Hide protected operating system files

  • Show device labels

  • Show a popup description for folders and desktop items

  • Show NTFS encrypted or compressed files in different colors

  • Use the Share Wizard

The settings that disappear are currently in Folder Options, which can be found through the Options menu in Explorer’s top bar. Most of these hides adjust or filter how and what is shown in Explorer, including options like hiding protected system files and displaying device labels by name for things like storage devices.

Nine options disappear from the Folder Options menu in the new version.

However, the settings do not disappear completely, but are still present in the system. The difference is that after the update they can only be set through the Registry Editor.

Microsoft is completely rebuilding Explorer using more modern technology and is already testing the new updated version among beta testers. New Explorer gets, among other things, better previews and faster searching.
