Microsoft on Thursday issued a notice to employees preventing them from using Chat GPT due to “security and data issues.” CNBC reports. The Midjourney image generator is also mentioned in the notice, which program staff should use with caution. In addition to the notice, Chat GPT has also been completely blocked. But after CNBC broke its news, Microsoft was quick to restore access to the chatbot and return its message.
When Microsoft later spoke about the incident, they said the ban was just a bug that came from internal system testing they conducted for large language programs. They say employees are happy using Chat GPT and Bing Chat, as Microsoft believes these two have a higher level of security.
It was ironic that it was Microsoft that blocked the use of Chat GPT, as the tech giant had invested large sums of money in the software. It pledged earlier this year to invest another $10 billion over the coming years.
Microsoft is now one of a number of large companies that have asked their employees not to use chatbots like Chat GPT. In the past, for example, both Samsung and Apple have done this, either through recommendations to their employees or banning software entirely in the workplace.
Can workplaces ban this type of software?
