The Microsoft Surface Duo mobile phone was released in two versions with both versions having a similar design. It was a laptop-like experience with the dual screens connected by a massive hinge. In recent years, bendable panels have become more popular, and now Microsoft seems to be embracing the trend with its third generation Duo.
According to the new information The Surface Duo 3 is expected to be presented at the end of 2023, more specifically in connection with the big Microsoft Surface event that historically takes place in October. The new design, which is said to have debuted during the event, is expected to have a more traditional foldable design, as the hinge can only be bent 180 degrees, as opposed to the 360 degrees that the previous hinge on the Duo can handle.
It remains to be seen if there will be other changes to the design. With downgradability, they may choose to implement an external display, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, but Microsoft may also keep the existing form factor to ensure the Duo stands out on store shelves.
The Surface Duo lived alongside other foldable devices where the screens are covered in a layer of durable plastic, partially reinforced with glass. The reason Microsoft moved its laptop design in favor of a bendable panel was justified by the ability to protect the panels with glass, as it is significantly more scratch-resistant than plastic-based solutions.
Microsoft is also expected to refrain entirely from releasing a new Duo, in favor of a more traditional mobile phone. What kind of mobile plans Microsoft has can only be said, while we wait for the Surface event in the fall to get official information.
