Summer in southern Europe has been marked by a battle between sun-hungry tourists and angry locals fed up with overexploitation.
In some places, local authorities have introduced legislation and fees to protect nature and ensure the survival of local people. But residents of tourist resorts have also taken action. In addition to large street demonstrations, other tactics are now being used.
On the tourist-favorite island of Mallorca, fake “beach closed” signs are now posted in front of many paths leading to the beaches.
caused traffic jams
According to a local protest organization, the purpose of the signs is to promote “resident use and comfort,” it wrote. Daily Mail.
In Cangas de Morazo, an area in northern Spain lined with beautiful sandy beaches, about 80 locals caused traffic chaos by walking back and forth across pedestrian crossings – so visitors couldn't reach the coast.
The purpose of the protest was to highlight the problem of beachgoers parking outside designated areas and causing further traffic chaos.
Some tourists are said to have given up trying to get there and turned back.
“This is not a hatred of tourists, it is the right of the residents to be left in peace, and it is about protecting our safety and our physical safety,” one resident told the Daily Mail.
10,000 demonstrated
There have been two major demonstrations so far this year in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, where tens of thousands of people gathered to protest some of the problems caused by mass tourism, such as overcrowding and high housing prices.
Other smaller protests were held in other parts of Mallorca as well as Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
