The development comes after Serbs on their side of the border used trucks and tractors late on Tuesday to block traffic towards the crossing at Merdar village.
Kosovo police said in a statement that the blockade was unacceptable because it “impedes the free movement” of people and goods.
The European Union and the United States called on Kosovo and Serbia to calm down in a joint statement.
After announcing the closure of the border crossing, the European Union and the United States wrote: “We call on everyone to exercise maximum restraint, to take immediate measures to de-escalate the situation without reservation and to refrain from provocations, threats and intimidation.”
There has long been tension between Kosovo and Serbia, which never recognized the new country that declared independence in 2008. The situation has worsened in recent weeks.
During December, ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo set up roadblocks on rural roads near the border with Serbia. Kosovo has asked the NATO-led international peacekeeping force Kfor to remove the barriers. There have also been shootings targeting KFOR and the Kosovo police.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Tuesday that the country’s military force at the border would be increased to 5,000 soldiers and put on high alert.
