Large gatherings are allowed again and the requirement to undergo a PCR test after entry will be removed from Thursday, says Hong Kong leader John Lee.

In addition, those who have been close to an infected person do not need to self-isolate. Limits on the number of people who can sit together in restaurants and bars have been removed.

Thus, almost all major restrictions disappear throughout the day. However, there is still a requirement for mouth protection and rapid tests in nurseries and schools.

Hong Kong has been hit hard by the strict quarantine rules, not least as a financial hub in Asia. John Lee claims the changes are possible now because the city’s immunity is high, the healthcare system has experience treating the coronavirus, awareness has been raised among residents and emergency preparedness has improved.

– The above changes are a strong impetus for Hong Kong’s recovery, says John Lee.

The announcement comes a day after mainland China relaxed entry rules. In early December, China made a drastic change in its policy towards combating the coronavirus.

Since then, the spread of infection has increased. According to some estimates, as many as 1 million Chinese citizens are at risk of dying from the coronavirus in the coming months.

Hong Kong was under the control of Great Britain until 1997. When handing over to China, which was carried out according to the “one country, two systems” formula, the Beijing regime promised to preserve democratic freedoms and rights until 2047.

But in recent years, the Chinese regime has consolidated its grip on Hong Kong, which previously enjoyed relative independence from mainland China.
