Belgium’s Lucas Donnet should have won an Oscar for his new film, “Closing,” says Kulturnytt reviewer Bjorn Jansson. The film depicts the strong friendship between boys Remy and Leo and their brutal confrontation with reality as they start middle school. The issues of the outside world and the need to adjust have dire consequences for Buddy.
And Janson isn’t alone in praising the film. Following his debut with “Girl” from 2018, Dhont has created a deeply human story about the love lives of young people, writes SVT’s Fredrik Sahlin. Its climactic storyline brings tears “from the corner of the critic’s usually dry eye”.
Emma Gray Munth writes in Aftonbladet that it’s impossible not to be touched – but she also thinks the premise is outdated.
“In Donut’s World,” Gray Monthh wrote, “things out of the ordinary are predetermined to end badly.”
