Ireland are still without a coach, with Belgium and Switzerland facing off in friendlies.
England Under-21s coach Lee Carsley, who led the team to European Championship glory last summer, has held talks with the FA over the vacant position.
“I think he feels valued by us, but I can understand why others are interested too,” Southgate said of Carsley’s link with Ireland after the UEFA Nations League draw.
“He enjoys the work he does with us. We are really happy to work with him.
“John McDermott's role as manager is to discuss things but he has done a fantastic job and we have great communication with all our junior teams.
“We basically have a club environment and we try to get as much involved as we can and we are always interested in learning more and more about the younger players.”
Regarding Carsley, Southgate continued: “From our point of view, he really understands the development part of his role, and the fact that we will be pressing his best players all the time!
“I did the (Under-21) job and it wasn't easy. But he did it very well, he has a good way of dealing with the players and they enjoy playing with him.
“He and his coaching team are contributing to the development of these players which is great for us.”
