After 200 metres, Ingebrigtsen took the lead and achieved a steady high speed, grilling the others and winning seemingly without difficulty. In the restroom, he caught Briton Jake Whitman (who runs only 800 miles EC) and sprinted off. He made sure to avoid that tonight when the races were postponed after heavy rain.
– I felt like the Spaniard (Mario Garcia) was close and touching my leg, which bothered me in the middle of the race, but I had good control and a lot left in the end, says Ingbrigtsen.
Older brother Henrik supported
In the stands, older brother Henrik was enjoying himself, just as he was in the restroom.
– It was totally fine with a championship record of 3.32 after a singles race, right? Henrik tells NRK.
The silver medal went to Jake Hayward of Great Britain, ahead of Mario Garcia of Spain.
On Tuesday, the Norwegian won the gold medal in the 5000 meters after a similar performance.
“I’ve been feeling good all week and we’ll see if there will be another race before I put my fitted boots off the season,” Ingebrigtsen believes.
The 21-year-old took her eighth international outdoor medal in track (Olympic, Pyrotechnics and EC) and followed up the double win at Berlin 2018 in the best possible way.
