India vs England Live: Cricket scorecard and updates from the third Test

Ben Stokes insists leaving Rehan Ahmed out of the third Test was never considered

Opener Ben Duckett smashed an 88-ball hundred to lead England's blistering reply to India's first innings total of 445 on day two of the third Test in Rajkot on Friday. The opener's 133 off 118 balls, which contained two sixes and 21 fours, took England to 207-2 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Ravichandran Ashwin became the second Indian bowler, after Anil Kumble, to take 500 Test wickets, but it was otherwise a day of slog for India as England recorded a near average run on the ball. Joe Root was hitting nine at stumps with England trailing India by 238 in the third match of the five-Test series, which remains poised at 1-1. Earlier, debutant Dhruv Gurriel (46) and Ashwin (37) formed a lively backline while Jasprit Bumrah (26) made a late cameo to take India close to the 450-run mark. After India resumed on 326-5, James Anderson removed the bouncer Thursday night, Kuldeep Yadav, who was arrested for four. Ravindra Jadeja, who completed his fourth Test hundred on day one, looked surprisingly tentative and returned the ball to Bowler Root to leave after 112, which included two sixes and nine fours.

Ashwin and Gurriel frustrated England with their 77-run partnership and survived a barrage of short balls from Mark Wood next to packed leg. England were rather sloppy on the field and Gurriel was dropped twice, first by Ollie Pope at mid-off and then by England captain Ben Stokes at leg slip. Rehan Ahmed Gurriel denied a fifty in the first Test to the batsman and Wood (4-114) dismissed Bumrah, who was the last Indian wicket to fall. The tourists started their innings with a 5-0 lead after India were penalized five runs for Ashwin's run into the protected area in mid-on. Duckett initially looked uncomfortable against Mohammed Siraj's lively pace, but his confidence soon grew, which was evident in the way he dealt with the Indian spinners. He raced to a 39-ball fifty but lost his opening partner Zak Crawley. Crawley attempted a powerful shot against Ashwin only to put the ball over the edge to Rajat Patidar at good short leg. Ashwin became the ninth player and fifth player to take 500 Test wickets. Duckett neutralized the Indian attack by batting with the kind of aggression that became the hallmark of the team under Stokes. The 29-year-old brought up his third Test hundred with a four off Siraj. Siraj lifted India's flagging morale late in the final session when he trapped Pope lbw for 39. The batsman was initially ruled not out but the decision was overturned on review.

“The five hundred wickets are all done and dusted now. We have a match hanging in the balance,” Ashwin said then. The game is going neck and neck. “We will have to bat and hit well to stay in the game.”

The great Ben Duckett shows England's key to victory in India with an unbeaten century

Ben Duckett's brilliant unbeaten century led England's resistance against India as he held off even Ravichandran Ashwin on the day the great off-spinner celebrated his 500th Test wicket.

India made 445 in Rajkot, helped by some struggling English players, but Duckett's boundary-laden 133 were not out off just 118 deliveries, taking the tourists' tally to 207 for two days after the second day of this third Test.

Duckett's first iteration as a Test cricketer met his demise in India after he was tormented by Ashwin in November 2016, but he laid all the ghosts in a classy innings, hitting 88 balls.

It was the fastest by an Englishman in India as he swept spinners to distract them in the final session as well as driving and cutting pace regularly, amassing 21 fours and two sixes.
