It took a little longer than usual, but Ifixit has now posted a full one disassembly Powered by Mac Studio, Apple’s new desktop hub.
First, Ifixit notes that it is easy to access and disassemble the computer. Torx screw after torx screw and no affixed components here are not.
Ifixit tested switching volumes between two Mac studios with a dfu reset via Apple Configurator with the following results:
- Switching between two computers with the same storage size works without problems.
- Adding an equally large volume from another Mac Studio to the empty volume will not work.
It’s possible that Ifixit missed something in the configuration, for example that the two modules come from different manufacturers, but the result could also be that Apple chose to lock each individual Mac Studio to a certain amount of storage to prevent customers from upgrading afterwards..
The fans in the huge heat sink make the fans in all the other Macs (except the Mac Pro we have to suppose) look fluffy, and the Ifixit screwdrivers like the big heat sink but shiver before having to dust it off after two years of use.
Ifixit has so far only disassembled and has not published any guide on how to do it yourself or give the computer a repairability rating.
