Finland’s women’s under-20s moved nearly one second off the national record in the WC’s 4x400m final. As for Ilona Mononen, she finished 8th in the 1500m event.
The Finnish 4x400m relay team impressed greatly in the time trial heat as the team set a new Finnish junior record and finished last in the U20 WC.
This was just the beginning. During the final day of the World Cup, this record was erased in the final match.
The quartet of Ronja Koskila, Katrina Wright, Ada Aho and Vera Mattila finished in 3.33.15 – a 95 per cent improvement over the time trial.
The time is a Finnish record at both U20 and U23 levels and the best achieved by a team in 28 years. At the senior level, no Finnish team has done better since the 1994 European Championship Final.
Finland finished second to Katrina Wright’s second stage effort, but in third place the team dropped to fourth. Ankarette Mattila dropped to fifth, but thanks to a solid sprint, Canada pulled past and brought Finland to the finish line in fourth.
The medals went to the expected titles. The United States won the gold in 3:28.06, while Jamaica took the silver and Great Britain the bronze.
Mononen is the second best European in the 1500 metres
Ilona Mononen finished second in WC scoring when she finished eighth in the 1500-meter event. Mononen finished the race on 4.16.19 and was the second best European sprinter in the race.
– I have never participated in such a difficult 1,500-meter race and did not expect that it would go so quickly, Mononen says in a press release.
Before the race I was a little tired and the expectations weren’t particularly high. Then I decided to pull myself together and it didn’t matter if my legs felt heavy.
Ethiopia’s Burke Hilum won the gold medal, ahead of Kenya’s Brenda Chebet and Buri Chepkirui. The best European runner was Norway’s Ingeborg Østgård in seventh place.
Finland finished 10th in the medal table in the water cycle, with one gold and two silvers. Among European countries, Finland is fifth in the medal table.
