Rishi Sunak commented on the criticism in a statement on Tuesday evening, after stories of the loosening began circulating in the British press.
– I know people are frustrated with politics and want real change. But in the long run, politicians have not been honest about what the costs of the changes will be, Sunak continues:
– Realism does not mean that we lose sight of our ambitions or abandon our duties – far from it. I am proud that Britain is leading the world in the fight against climate change. And we firmly commit to being climate neutral by 2050. But it should be done in a better, more proportionate way.
Finished almost three months ago The country’s climate change panel said the government’s efforts in the region have been “worryingly slow” and that it has lost its position as a world leader in the fight against climate change.
Climate politics can stop civil peace
If Rishi Sunak stands firm on changes to British climate policy, it will be a major shift in British politics.
Until now, both the British Conservatives and the Social Democratic Labor Party have agreed on British climate policy.
But the biggest problem may actually come from Sunak’s own teams. Many of his party colleagues are already criticizing these statements.
Former Conservative minister Simon Clarke, writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, is ‘making sure we as Conservatives lead in this area instead of giving up on our environmental, economic, moral and (yes) political interests’.
He is backed by another former Conservative minister, Zach Goldsmith, who is attacking the prime minister for undermining Britain’s credibility on the climate front.
– His short tenure as Prime Minister will be remembered as the moment when Britain turned the world around and future generations. A moment of shame, he tells the BBC.
However, some members of the party have also come out and hailed Sunak as ‘practical’.
This is not the first time Rishi Sunak’s climate policy has been in the spotlight.
