Let’s assume that the competition to host the 2028 European Football Championship is not fierce by all standards. The United Kingdom and Ireland will be the only two organizations that have chosen to host.
Several British media outlets, including The Times and The Telegraph, have reported that the app has paid off. Not surprisingly.
Tomorrow is the last day for applications and on April 7, UEFA is expected to present the decision, which is a formality at the moment.
One country that was said to have been interested in hosting the European Championship in 2028 is Russia, but due to the invasion of Ukraine it is no longer relevant.
The tournament will therefore be spread across the British Isles and will take place in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Most matches, two-thirds, will be played in England and the final will be played at Wembley.
England gets a chance for revenge
With this announcement, England gets a new chance to win the gold medal in the European Championships at home. In 2021, as is known, the tournament was arranged throughout Europe. The opening ceremony was held at the Olympic Stadium in Rome – and the final was held at Wembley.
It’s fitting that it was Italy and England who finally settled for the title – and, as you know, the English men fell after a thrilling final that featured a penalty shootout.
Better luck next time, after six years?
Before that, a European Championship will be held in Germany in 2024.
