Google is tightening advertising rules ahead of the Swedish elections. To counter misinformation

There are elections in Sweden this year. In connection with this, Google will introduce some measures to prevent the spread of misinformation across its platforms, TT reports.

In the run-up to the Swedish elections, Google will, among other things, strengthen regulations for political advertising. This means that advertisers must register and that they can only target their ads based on age, gender, and zip code criteria. There will also be a database where it will be clear who is behind certain ads, what they paid for, and which target groups the ad is targeting.

In addition to tightening the rules for political ads, Google will also create a special electoral team comprising employees from Google’s Swedish offices and Google’s international experts. These will be available to authorities, politicians, and journalists who want direct contact with Google. Moreover, training will be provided to political parties in security issues and support will be given to the role of the media to strengthen action against, among other things, congestion attacks.
