Freya the Walrus is dead | GP

Early on Sunday morning, the Norwegian Fisheries Directorate carried out a controlled operation in which Freya walruses were euthanized, writes VG magazine.

The brave walrus has been lurking around the coast near Oslo for some time. Her existence was not entirely without problems as, among other things, she was sunbathing on boats in the port. On one occasion, she was also said to have hunted bathed in Kadettangen in Norwegian Bærum.

Authorities in Norway have urged the public to leave the walrus alone. They believed that loved ones could provoke escape situations where Freya would hurt herself or anyone else, which in turn could lead to people asking for her euthanasia.

Executed without drama

But despite repeated calls, the public did not follow the recommendations to stay away from the walrus, and dangerous situations arose on several occasions, the Fisheries Directorate wrote on its website.

Now Freya has been mercifully killed.

According to the authority, the procedure was carried out in a manner responsible for the welfare of the animal.

Well-trained personnel carried out the operation in accordance with current routine procedures for the killing of marine mammals. The work proceeded without drama, says Fisheries Director Frank Buck-Jensen.

The walrus was handed over to a vet for further handling.
