France seizes Russian-flagged cargo ship – Sydsvenskan

Decisions on sanctions against Russian interests culminated when France seized a Russian cargo ship.

But the Ukrainian president is appealing to Russia to shut down the Swift banking system.

France boarded a cargo ship bound for Saint Petersburg, Russia. The French navy stopped the ship in the English Channel as part of European Union sanctions against Russia.

The Russian-flagged ship, which sailed from Rouen in France, was carrying a cargo of vehicles. The ship was directed to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer by French forces.

The ship is suspected to be owned by a company that has been sanctioned due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A spokesman for the Russian embassy in Paris told the state-controlled Russian news agency TASS that they had contacted the French authorities to obtain an explanation of the incident.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again on Saturday appealed for Russia to be shut down from the SWIFT financial transaction system. The call is directed specifically to the two countries that are said to be reluctant to comment:

– There is almost complete support from the European Union countries to separate Russia from Swift. I hope Germany and Hungary will have the courage to support such a decision, says Zelensky in a video posted on social media.
