A British retailer has been ordered to remove prepackaged beef labeled as British but originating in South America.
The order came from the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU), an arm of the Food Standards Agency. FarmingUK writes that they are working to investigate a possible case of food fraud involving prepackaged beef
NFCU declined to disclose which retailer or supermarket chain it was involved with.
Food fraud
NFCU vice president Andrew Quinn said the investigation was not a food safety issue, but a food fraud issue.
– The retailer was notified that action would be taken against the food company suspected of fraud, and all affected products were immediately removed from their shelves. This type of fraud investigation takes time to review the evidence and reach a conclusion. But we take food fraud very seriously and act quickly to protect consumers,” said Andrew Quinn.
Ten years after the horsemeat scandal in Britain, a potential case of British-labeled meat meal fraud is believed to have come from South America. Horse meat was found in products labeled as beef – resulting in millions of product recalls.
