Finland’s upcoming Davis Cup quarter-final opponents were drawn on Tuesday. Finland will take on world number one Davis Cup champion Canada.
Davis Cup Final 21-26 in Malaga. November. The exact plan will be released later.
Eight countries are in the competition. The tournament is played in a cup format, meaning that the loser of the quarter-finals ends the tournament and the winner advances to the semi-finals. The other quarter-final matches are Czech Republic-Australia, Italy-Netherlands and Serbia-Great Britain.
If Finland defeats Canada, the winner of the quarter-final between the Czech Republic and Australia will meet in the semi-finals.
– Now we are aiming for the dream of our dreams: victory in the whole Davis Cup, that is, the World Championship. At this point, the best of everyone is involved, so it’s going to be tight. “If we can play like we did in Split, we will be a very tough team to beat,” Finland captain Jarko Nieminen commented in a press release.
Canada reached the quarterfinals despite its top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP No. 14) missing the previous round due to injury. Among Canadians, Denis Shapovalov (ranked 31st in the ATP rankings) is higher than the great Finn Emil Ruzuvuri (ranked 57th in the ATP rankings).
Finland moved into the top eight after defeating hosts Croatia and tennis giants USA in Split last week.
Finland’s squad includes Emil Rusuvuori, Otto Virtanen, Patrik Niklas-Salminen, Patrik Kaukovaalta and Hari Heliovara and captain Jarko Nieminen.
The Davis Cup has been played since 1900, but it was only this year that Finland reached the top 16 for the first time, and after another top eight.
