Glaciers are disappearing in many parts of the world, and in New Zealand this is happening so quickly that scientists are shocked that these famous landmarks are melting.
Every year, scientists fly over New Zealand’s glaciers to determine the extent of their disappearance, but this year was a different year – some glaciers were almost completely gone. Other, more famous glaciers, such as the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, have retreated significantly, CNN writes.
Glaciers are disappearing quickly
Andrew Lowry He leads the research and has been studying New Zealand’s glaciers since 2009, and he’s grim in his diagnosis.
“I see this beautiful part of our natural environment slipping through our fingers. If you have ever experienced a glacier first hand, you know that it is amazing, amazing and life-changing.”
It is climate change with increasingly hot temperatures, 2018 was a particularly warm year, the ice blocks can’t cope. As you know, it’s such a global problem that scientists say half of the world’s glaciers will be gone by 2100, even if we reach ambitious emissions cuts.
special relationship
In New Zealand, locals have always had a special relationship, so it’s also about missing something on a mental level, he says. Lauren Fargoa researcher from Wellington who is also part of the research.
She also believes that icebergs hold a lot of fresh water, which is especially important when there is a drought, and they give early results in environmental changes that tell us there are other things we don’t see.
