Facilitating vision requirements for driver’s licenses is underway

The Swedish vision requirements have received criticism For being unnecessarily harsh when it comes to visual field loss.

– Sweden has been shown to have stricter visibility requirements than other European countries with high traffic safety, says Asa Eriksson, an investigator at the Swedish Transport Agency.

The proposed field of view requirements mean that a certain low light sensitivity will be accepted in the field of view – both for lower and higher licenses. The limit value has been changed to a similar level as in Norway and Great Britain, countries that also have high road safety requirements.

Eye examination only by a doctor or eye specialist

As suggested by the Swedish Transport Agency All vision tests for driver’s licenses must be performed by an eye specialist or doctor. The reason is that the Swedish Transport Agency does not have the authority to check the quality of eye examinations carried out by the driving school.

In order to alleviate eye care, it will be possible to carry out all certifications required by the Swedish Transport Agency by an eye specialist.

The proposals have been sent for consultation. The goal is for the new rules to take effect in the fall of 2024.
