Extension of the entry ban for travelers to Sweden and exemptions for fully vaccinated travelers from the United States of America

The government is extending the travel ban for travel to Sweden, from countries outside and within the EU/EEA, from October 31. The government has also decided to make changes meaning that people who can present vaccination certificates issued in the USA, Guernsey, Isle of Man and Jersey are exempt from entry bans and testing requirements upon entering Sweden.

Today the government decided to extend the travel ban for travel to Sweden, from countries outside and within the EU/EEA. This is mainly due to the uncertain relocation situation that the government decided to extend the travel ban to Sweden.

Entry from EU/EEA countries

The entry ban for travelers into Sweden from countries within the EU/EEA has been extended until November 30, 2021.

The government has previously assessed that entry restrictions within the EU/EEA should be carefully curtailed to reduce the risk of relapse requiring new restrictions. Especially in light of the fact that some countries in Europe have seen an increased spread of infection recently, the restrictions should remain in place for another period. To travel to Sweden from these countries, you must still be able to show an EU digital covid certificate or equivalent certificate stating that you have either been vaccinated against covid-19, tested negative within 72 hours prior to arrival, or recovered from covid-19 in within 6 months.

As before, people traveling from Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway are not subject to any entry restrictions and therefore do not need to present a certificate when entering Sweden.

Entry from countries outside the EU/EEA

The ban on entry to Sweden for travelers from countries outside the EU/EEA has been extended until January 31, 2022.

This entry ban is based on a recommendation of the EU Council of Ministers valid indefinitely, so the extension is in line with the recommendation.

For a foreign national traveling to Sweden from a country outside the EU/EEA, it also continues to apply to persons who are exempt from the entry ban, who can also submit a negative covid-19 test, or who are exempted from testing requirements, may travel to Country. Exceptions are made to the entry ban and testing requirements for several categories of travelers.

Exceptions for fully vaccinated travelers from the USA

Today the government also decided that people who travel to Sweden and can present a certificate of vaccination issued in the USA are exempt from both the entry ban and test requirements.

Sweden enjoys a close and good relationship with the United States with important cooperation in many areas. Therefore, travel between Sweden and the United States is of great importance in many different ways, including the fact that it plays a major role in companies’ competitiveness and opportunities to conduct their operations. The United States intends to allow entry to fully vaccinated travelers from all 26 Schengen countries from November 8. So it is very important that even travelers who have been vaccinated from the USA can now travel to Sweden in an easier way.

Finally, the government also decided that people who can present vaccination certificates issued in Guernsey, Isle of Man and Jersey should be completely exempt from entry restrictions. This is in addition to the government’s October 7 decision regarding UK vaccination certificates being officially issued in the UK.
