As oil, gas and coal producing countries continue to extract fossil fuels, reaching the Paris Agreement is unlikely. – Countries and oil producers must take responsibility for reducing the extraction of oil, coal and natural gas in line with the requirements and promises of reduced emissions to achieve the Paris Agreement. Today, these are not mutually exclusive, says Martin Hedberg, meteorologist and natural disaster expert at Länsförsäkringar.
To meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degree target, oil, coal and gas production would have to double. This is shown by a report by researchers from the United Nations Environment Agency UNEP and the Stockholm Environment Institute.
– We will face irreversible climate catastrophes if the fossil fuel producers plan and act. “Net-zero” and other sustainability pledges remain wishful thinking with no chance of realization. Therefore, we must prepare for permafrost, floods, droughts, heat-related deaths, widespread forest deaths and fires. In addition, says Martin Hedberg, there are geopolitical consequences such as sea level rise, natural resources, crop failure, famine and mass migration.
The United States, Russia, China and Saudi Arabia are the largest producers of fossil fuels and are expected to increase their production in the coming years. Many countries such as Norway and Great Britain continue to search for oil and gas
