The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is finally here and this year’s competition is taking place in Liverpool, England. It will be a memorable event with Europe and Australia competing for victory. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the first semi-final.
The first semi-final takes place on May 9 and starts at 21:00 on SVT and SVT Play. The host arena is the M&S Bank Arena, which can accommodate up to 11,000 spectators.
The reason Britain is hosting is because last year’s winners, the Ukrainian Kalush Band, were unable to perform due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Thus, Great Britain, which was second last year, has taken over the hosting.
Presenters for this year’s Eurovision are actor Hannah Waddingham, singer and presenter Alesha Dixon and Ukrainian artist Yulia Sanina. Graham Norton also joins the finale.
Eduard auf Sillen and Mans Zelmerlov comment on this year’s competition for SVT. This is the twelfth time Chillen has commented and the second for Zelmarlo. They previously worked together during Eurovision 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Among the first semi-finalists we find Loreen representing Sweden with the song “Tattoo”. He is competing against artists from Norway, Malta, Serbia and Latvia.
After last year’s polling rigging, the polling rules have been changed. Now only spectators will be allowed to vote in the semi-finals and viewers from non-participating countries will also be able to vote online. Their votes are as influential as those of participating countries.
Voting begins after the last entry sings its song and lasts approximately 15 minutes. To vote, you can call 099-212 01 to 099-212 16 or send an SMS to 72211 with the starting number of the grant you want to vote for from 01 to 16. Each call and SMS costs SEK 3.60. Any transport charges.
Get ready for an unforgettable night of music and excitement as the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 kicks off in Liverpool!
