Evan Toney suspended for eight months

Evan Toney was suspected of breaching FA rules regarding sports betting, when he played in Premier League matches, 262 times between February 2017 and January 2021.

The Football Association has now concluded its investigation and states that Tony was guilty of 232 counts, which he also pleaded guilty to.

The sentence will be harsh. The successful player is banned from football for eight months and will therefore not be allowed to play for Brentford before January 16th next year.

The ban is effective immediately, meaning the Brentford forward will miss the team’s last two matches of the season – away to Tottenham on Saturday and at home to Manchester City in the final round.

It will be a big break for Brentford as Evan Toni has so far scored 20 goals in 33 Premier League games this season.

During the first four months of the punishment, Tony is also not allowed to train with the team and must also be fined SEK 650,000.

Evan Toney commented on the ruling on Twitter and wrote, among others:

“I am of course disappointed that I will not be able to play for the next eight months. A written decision has not yet been published so I will offer no further comment at this time other than to thank my family and friends, Brentford and our fans for their support, during what has been a very difficult time.”
