Britain held its best Eurovision Song Contest in years last year when Sam Ryder took the country to second place.

This year, May Mueller, 25, is hoping for another win — and at home.

– It feels amazing, of course there is some natural pressure, but I think it’s good. I feel this makes me work even harder and I want to continue this positive trend. May Mueller says the fact that Sam did so well last year means people are already positive about it.

The song “I Wrote a Song” is actually about Mae Mueller deciding to write a song.

– Not everyone writes songs to get things, this is a very personal experience for me. But I think people can relate to how to navigate those negative emotions, how to take care of yourself to resist digging yourself into that hole and being bitter and vindictive.

The song came to May Muller after a difficult period. Instead of writing a song about the negative feelings that might arise, he decided to reverse the perspective.

– That’s where one’s thoughts can go when you’re hurt, and sometimes those feelings aren’t good, but instead I wanted to write something that could strengthen people, she continues:

– I write when I’m down, I thought it would be a good idea for a song, instead of writing about what they did or the situation, I write how I cope with it.

As part of the so-called “Big Five” and as the host country, Great Britain qualified directly for the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest.

May Muller starts at number 26, the last, and says it feels “unreal” to be representing her home country in her home country.

– Every time someone says it out loud or I say it out loud, it’s totally crazy. Hosting Ukraine makes it all the more special and it is very important that they are celebrated as this is their year.
