EU-UK relations: Council Presidency and European Parliament reach provisional agreement on regulation of autonomous activities

The Council Presidency and the European Parliament have reached a preliminary agreement on autonomy measures. Before the text can be formally adopted, it must be approved by the Council and the European Parliament.

The Regulation lays down rules and procedures to enable the EU to ensure the swift and effective exercise of Union rights in the application and enforcement of the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

This regulation includes a number of measures that the European Union may adopt if necessary

– Corrective measures, rebalancing measures and compensatory measures in many areas

– Temporary suspension of the relative preferential treatment of certain products

– Granting, revoking, suspending, limiting or refusing to impose conditions on approvals or permits for air carriers and their operations;

– Measures restricting trade, investment or other activities

The Commission is hereby empowered by law to implement these measures, specifying their duration wherever appropriate.

Any measures taken must always be proportionate and effective in bringing the UK into compliance with the relevant treaties.
