Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon, who had a good season in a mixed season on Tyneside, has earned his first call-up. The player of the tournament, in which England won the European Under-21 Championship last summer, will be hoping to recover from the knee injury he suffered in the defeat to Chelsea on Monday, in time to win his first international cap.
Cole Palmer, the star of Chelsea's win over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, is another hopeful of a full first cap after making a compelling case for his inclusion in his performances since his £40m move from Manchester City in August.
Gareth Southgate has shown his enduring faith in 33-year-old Jordan Henderson after returning to Europe with Ajax following his ill-fated and much-criticized move to the Saudi Professional League with Al-Ettifaq.
The inclusion of Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who only returned in January from an eight-month ban for breaching FA betting regulations, comes as a surprise but makes sense as Southgate explores the possibility of finding a replacement for his captain Harry Kane.
Toney made one international appearance as a substitute against Ukraine in March last year, and is clearly under consideration alongside Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, who appears to be the front-runner for the role given his outstanding form at club level.
