England into quarter-finals after crazy turnaround

The Euro 2016 last 16 tie between England and Slovakia turned out to be an exciting one to say the least.

It was Slovakia who stopped playing immediately, and after a strong start to the match, they were rewarded as well.

In the 25th minute of the match, Evan Schranz scored the deserved goal to make it 1-0 – his third goal in the EC Championship. With this, he shares the top scorer position with Georgia's George Mikautadze and Germany's Jamal Musiala.

On the road to failure

England, looking for an equaliser, had more possession but there were few real chances and the team were booed off by the crowd as they went into half-time trailing 1-0.

Things did not improve at the start of the second half, when Phil Foden looked to have equalised but a VAR review showed he was offside and the goal was ruled out.

Slovakia looked to be heading into a very tense quarter-final, but England – who were on course for a miserable failure – were not giving up yet, despite time running out.

In the fifth minute of extra time came the equaliser, a technical goal scored by 21-year-old England star Jude Bellingham, who equalised the match 1-1 and forced extra time.

– Jude does what Jude does, it's an unbelievable goal. It's one of the best goals in our country's history, says team captain Harry Kane in SVT.

Harry Kane decided

Straight into extra time, England's next big star stepped forward. With less than a minute to play, Kane headed home to make it 2-1, and England's turnaround was a reality.

Slovakia took the lead at the end of extra time but were not rewarded, and so the European Football Championship was over for that time.

– We came close to making history for our country, it's very painful. We know it's just football, but it's a huge disappointment. “But I'm proud of the players and the performance we put in tonight,” says Slovakian David Hanko.

For England, a quarter-final against Switzerland now awaits them.
