Last week, a draft was leaked by the Supreme Court showing that a majority of HD judges want to remove the national abortion law in the US and instead turn the abortion case over to individual states. Nowadays, the HD Resolution of 1973 guarantees the right to abortion.
To enshrine abortion rights in federal law would require at least 60 of the 100 senators to vote in favor of the proposal — but with 50 Republicans and 50 Democrats in the Senate, the motion is unlikely to pass.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says the vote is important after all, because elected representatives must publicly show which side they support and that it can play a role in the upcoming midterm elections.
– We’ll vote on Wednesday. And every American will see how every Senator stands. They can no longer dodge, Schumer says at a news conference in New York on Sunday.
According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, released Friday, about 61 percent of Americans believe that abortion should remain legal in most cases.
But as with many other social issues, the gap between Democrats and Republicans is large and growing. Eight out of ten Democrats support abortion rights in most cases. That’s more than double the 38 percent of Republicans who do so, according to the Pew Research Center.
