Many popular nature reserves are affected. Many trails will be closed in the Bergs klätt Nature Reserve. Gettjärnsklätten has only one hiking trail to the top, and it will be completely closed off. On the southern tip of Hammarö, Arnäs udde and Rennstadsnipan Nature Reserve, there are also many dead trees in the forest and along some paths. There are no closed roads there, but the County Board of Directors is calling for increased vigilance.
– It’s hard with dead trees because they don’t just fall when the wind is strong. As dead spruce ages, it becomes progressively more brittle. Then they can fall out even in calm weather, says Jan Cedervind, director of protected areas for the Värmland County Board.
Due to the current situation, the County Board of Directors is now closing trails in areas with the most dead trees. Closed lanes will not be maintained.
– On the information boards in the reserves, and where the trails begin, there will be signs advising the public not to visit certain parts, says Margareta Auckermann, director of protected areas at the Värmland County Board.
The county management board monitors development in nature reserves and reviews the possibility of restoring trails when necessary.
– The information will be published on the provincial council’s website on the pages of the concerned nature reserves. We also want to urge all visitors to be especially careful when navigating an area with many dead trees, regardless of whether they are on or off a marked path. Dead trees and inclement weather always mean an increased risk of falling trees, Jan Cedervind says.
There are 221 nature reserves in Värmland that are worth visiting. More information about nature reserves can be found on the county management board’s website under the heading Destinations.
