Nine Republicans voted with the Democrats. The announcement came as a result of Bannon’s refusal to cooperate with the investigation into the deadly storming of the Capitolium on January 6.
A lawsuit can be filed
The challenge of Congress can be likened to the challenge of the court. If convicted, Bannon faces up to 12 months in prison or a fine.
With a majority of House members voting in favor of holding Bannon accountable, the case is now being referred to the Justice Department, which may decide whether to go to trial.
I challenged the call
Bannon was called to testify last week before the House Congressional Attack Committee, but he did not turn up. Among other things, committee members wanted to ask him about his conversation with Donald Trump before the storm, but Bannon defied legally binding subpoenas by pointing to the special protections (“executive privilege” in English) that surround the presidency.
But this statement was not accepted by the commission.
Trump fired his chief strategist in August 2017, but the two are known to have been in touch in recent years. However, because Bannon was not a White House employee or a state employee when the deadly congressional attack occurred, there is no indication that he was covered by the former president’s potential legal protections, the panel said.
