A goal doomed to fail for Finland.
Then Roger Runeberg revolted against the judges.
– If you want to see referees get involved, you can watch Idol or something like that, says SVT’s coach Frölunda.
The Hockey World Cup became a cold story from a Swedish point of view, when they were already knocked out in the group stage after losing to Denmark, Belarus and the Czech Republic after full time, but also against Russia on penalties. But despite the lack of a playoff, Tre Kronor managed to be part of a really talked-about conversation about the referee’s stance.

In the match against Great Britain, Sweden ended up at a disadvantage already in the first period, after Victor Fast was really hit by a British player at the same time the puck crossed the finish line. When the case was approved, the judges held long and long deliberations about what should actually be judged – and a similar conference the judges also held in the quarter-final between Finland and the Czech Republic, which has now led to significant discussions.
The 1-0 goal came in the match in the second half, but already in the first period Finland were close to the lead – but then it took a full six minutes (!) for the judges to come to the conclusion that it was being rejected, which led to criticism in the studio SVT.
– Here you have time to fall asleep. If you want to see referees consult, you can watch Idol or something like that, says Frölunda coach Roger Ronberg, an expert during the World Cup, on SVT.
In the semi-finals
On the ice, judges said it was nearly impossible to judge whether or not a puck was inside – but no evidence was found that she actually crossed the finish line, which was the basis of the decision.
“We looked at 15 corners, but we couldn’t see that the disc was in goal in any of them,” the umpires said on the ice.
However, Finland managed to advance to the semi-finals after winning the match 1-0. With that, Jerry Inala scored the only goal of the match in the second half, and thus the great hero was goalkeeper Jose Olkenura, who kept the zero and saved all 28 shots he made against him.
As for Finland, Germany – who somewhat surprisingly beat Switzerland in the quarter-finals – are now waiting in the semi-finals. And in the second match, Canada, who beat Russia in the quarter-finals, will face the United States.
