British charging operators want to see reduced VAT on electric car charging – to offer cheaper charging

British charging operators want public electric car charging to see VAT reduced in the country. This is because electricity prices in Great Britain have recently increased and become very erratic. Recently, charging operator Osprey Charging was forced to raise its prices by £1/kWh (12 SEK/kWh).

A total of 27 operators have signed the open letter. The letter states that the reduction of VAT from 20 to five percent will directly pass back to the end customer.

In parallel, the British government is already working on designing energy support for entrepreneurs during the October to March period. It is not yet clear how this will help the charge operators. Operators believe that reducing VAT is the quickest solution.

The letter continues: “Furthermore, electric drivers who depend on the public charging network, including those unable to charge at home, will benefit the most. This will help end the current inequality between those who have and those who do not have a driveway.

Operators also believe that reducing VAT will favor continued conversion to electric cars. It also sends a signal that the government is serious about reducing pollution from the transport sector.

Earlier this year, the UK scrapped bonuses for electric passenger cars. Arguably, the transition to electric cars has now gained sufficient momentum. Instead, there was support for expanding charging infrastructure and electric vans and trucks to electrify commercial transport.
