Russian warplane collides with US drone over Black Sea One of the propellers was reportedly damaged and the drone was thrown from the air. The US says the fighter jet flew the drone on purpose, but Russia says it flew too close to the Russian border.
This, along with several incidents in recent days, has led to heightened tensions between Russia and the NATO military alliance.
British Conservative politicians warned on Thursday that the incident must have consequences Mail online.
MP Tobias Ellwood described the incident as a “blatant attack on international airspace” and believes the “unbelievable” incident is an example of how quickly tensions can escalate between countries.
Two incidents in a short span of time
According to one source CNN Two Russian SU-27 fighter jets simultaneously flew a US Defense MQ-9 Reaper model drone over the Black Sea. A plane must have intentionally flown in front of the drone and dumped fuel.
The US military later released footage purported to show the seconds before the drone and the Russian plane collided.
Russia has denied the allegations. They believe the American drone went “in the direction of the state border of the Russian Federation.” Russia’s Defense Ministry told Russian news agency RIA Novosti that it flew very close to the Crimean peninsula.
Hours after the drone crashed into the Black Sea, two Russian planes were reported near Estonian airspace. The unannounced approach led to Britain and Germany sending two fighter jets.
