But he adds:
– I know that the majority of members of the Senate and House of Representatives said that they stand behind supporting Ukraine.
A few days ago, Biden assured NATO and EU leaders that support for Ukraine would continue. But just hours later, the House of Representatives voted to impeach its Speaker (Kevin McCarthy) for the first time in history.
By then, Biden’s party and Republicans, with McCarthy playing spider in the web, had reached an agreement that blocked a budget shutdown but without promises of more aid to Ukraine. Republicans who voted for McCarthy have been highly critical of support for Ukraine, and McCarthy has been accused of secretly saying yes to more support.
But the mere fact that the House is now devoting its energies to trying to appoint a new speaker means that further support may be delayed, or ultimately halted.
Biden says he will soon deliver a major speech explaining how important it is to support Ukraine in the fight against the Russian invaders. He also stressed the importance of the countries that have supported Ukraine so far fulfilling their promises.
The White House has strongly stressed that Ukraine has no time to wait, and that weapons and other assistance provided so far could be used within months.
