Argentina fight in vain – one goal is enough for England | Sports

England are ready for the last 16 of the World Cup. Phil Neville's side claimed their second successive win when they beat Argentina after taking a big 1-0 lead.

Argentina were responsible for the biggest shock of the first group stage when they drew 0-0 with Japan, who had reached the World Cup finals in the previous tournament.

The happy amateurs from Argentina also made life miserable for England, ranked third in the world. Although England dominated the match, it was difficult to create scoring chances.

And the hot positions they made were saved by the great Argentine goalkeeper Vanina Correa. The experienced cage keeper saved, among other things, a penalty kick taken by Nikita Parris in the first half.

Argentina's attacking play was straightforward.

The decision was made after just over an hour. England launched a typical attack that ended with a left-wing cross from Beth Mead finding Jodie Taylor. The England striker finished clear.

After that, there was no question of who would win the game. Argentina had no attacking game to speak of and England were closer to a 2-0 win than a cold Argentine shower.

With the win, England top Group D with six points. Japan are second with four points, while Argentina have one goal and Scotland have zero.

In the final, England will play Japan, and Argentina will play Scotland. Both matches will be played on Wednesday.
