The whales had intercourse in January 2022 off the coast of Hawaii, USA. Mating and copulation between humpback whales, unlike other whales, has been a mysterious phenomenon.

The new discovery says a lot about this species, according to the author of the research report.

This discovery challenges our preconceptions about the behavior of humpback whales, Stephanie Sack tells The Guardian.

Uses fins

The picture shows how one of the humpback whales uses its fins to hold the other whale in place during the breach.

-We have known about the social behavior of humpback whales for a long time. But watching two male whales copulate for the first time is unique and eye-catching, Sack says.

The humpback whale can reach a length of 16 meters and weigh a little more than 36 tons. According to researchers, the whale that was hacked into the photo is damaged and suffering from whale lice.

“Therefore, it is possible that this behavior was unwelcome, but the whales lacked the energy to implement avoidance strategies,” the researchers wrote in the report.

During the 1990s, the humpback whale was considered an endangered species, but the number of humpback whales has increased in recent years.
